Melaka Identifies 29 Geological Heritage Sites
Telok Mas – A total of 29 geological heritage sites identified across the state of Melaka are set to become new tourism attractions, further strengthening the diversity of destinations available to both domestic and international visitors.
Melaka State Executive Councillor for Tourism, Heritage, Arts and Culture, Datuk Wira Abdul Razak Abdul Rahman, said the identified locations possess unique geological, natural heritage and historical significance, making them highly suitable for the development of nature-based tourism.
He explained that the initiative forms part of Melaka's efforts towards obtaining National Geopark recognition by next year, following approval by the State Executive Council (MMKN).
"Alhamdulillah, the State Government has given its approval, and the next step is to obtain endorsement at the Federal level to enable Melaka to be officially recognised as a National Geopark.
"This is an important milestone as it not only strengthens the conservation of the state's geological heritage but also creates new economic opportunities through the tourism sector."
He said this during an episode of the Mana Lagi Melaka Ler Podcast, produced by Melaka Hari Ini.
According to Abdul Razak, the 29 geological heritage sites are distributed across all three districts of Melaka, each showcasing its own unique geological formations and natural heritage.
Among the sites with significant potential is Bukit Larang in the Telok Mas State Constituency (DUN), which features remarkable geological formations with high scientific and heritage value.
He added that these sites are expected to attract nature enthusiasts, researchers, students and members of the geotourism community from both Malaysia and abroad.
"Geoparks have their own dedicated community of enthusiasts. Around the world, geology-based tourism is gaining increasing attention because it offers visitors a unique and meaningful experience.
"That is why we see geoparks as a new tourism segment that Melaka has the opportunity to develop further."
He also noted that the development of the geopark will complement Melaka's existing tourism ecosystem, which is already well known for its history, culture, heritage and recreational attractions.
He added that achieving National Geopark status is expected to enhance the state's tourism industry while encouraging visitors to extend their stay in Melaka.
