Melaka Aims for National Geopark Recognition by 2026
DUYONG, 14 July – Melaka has set its sights on achieving National Geopark recognition by the end of 2026.
To realise this goal, the Department of Minerals and Geoscience Malaysia (JMG) for Negeri Sembilan/Melaka is carrying out scientific studies and geological site characterisation at several identified locations across the state before they are evaluated for official recognition.
According to JMG Negeri Sembilan/Melaka Director Haniza Zakri, five locations have so far undergone geological site characterisation: Pulau Upeh, Pulau Besar, Pulau Undan, Tanjung Tuan and Sungai Rambai.
She added that three additional locations—Bukit Beruang, Bukit Larang Telok Mas and Air Panas Gadek—will be studied this year to assess their geological significance and other heritage values.
She explained that, as one of Malaysia's leading tourism destinations, National Geopark recognition would add significant value to Melaka by creating new geotourism products and offering more meaningful experiences for visitors.
"At the same time, Geopark status can help improve the socio-economic well-being of local communities by creating employment opportunities and promoting Melaka's history, heritage, culture and local products such as traditional food and handicrafts.
"At present, Melaka holds the status of an Aspiring Geopark. With close cooperation from the Melaka State Government, particularly the State Economic Planning Unit (UPEN), together with relevant departments and agencies, we hope Melaka will achieve National Geopark recognition by the end of 2026.
"To achieve this goal, at least 15 locations throughout Melaka will need to undergo geological site characterisation, and we are confident this target can be achieved within the planned timeframe."
She said this while attending the Aspiring Melaka Geopark Community Awareness Programme held in conjunction with the Wakil Rakyat Untuk Rakyat (WRUR) programme at Taman Seri Duyong 2.
She also revealed plans to make Duyong the first Geopark Model Village in Melaka, citing its rich geological heritage, including millions-of-years-old laterite formations, as well as its strong cultural heritage.
Among the area's notable attractions are Hang Tuah's Underground Water Well, Hang Tuah Cultural Village, the Heritage Mosque, and several other sites of historical and geological significance.
